설명이 필요 없는 민족의 명산으로서 힘들고 어려울 때 나를 믿어준 “내 마음의 고향(故鄕)”과 같은 작품이다. 이 작품은 산수경석(山水景石)의 정석(定石)과도 같아 지리산에서만 느낄 수 있는, 고향과 같은 넉넉함과 포근함이 그야말로 일품이다. 크기 또한 2m에 이르는 대작으로서 작은 돌에서는 느낄 수 없는 호방함을 감상할 수 있으며, 물을 친 모습에서 나타나는 지리산 오석(烏石)에서만 볼 수 있는 검은색의 변화는 가히 수석의 진미라 말할 수 있을 것이다.

Jirisan is a mountain widely acknowledged as a national treasure and needs no introduction in Korea. This piece, aptly named “Hometown in My Heart,” portrays Jirisan as a steadfast companion during my challenging times. It perfectly embodies a landscape viewing stone, capturing the warmth and comfort that Jirisan uniquely offers, akin to the coziness of home. Measuring two meters, this impressive piece provides a sense of grandeur that smaller stones simply cannot offer. Additionally, the distinctive black color that emerges when the stone is moistened, unique to Jirisan’s black stones, is the epitome of viewing stone artistry. 

설산의 비경을 만끽할 수 있는 이 작품을 통해서 백석(白石)의 아름다움을 보았고 백석에 관심을 갖게 되었다. 어느 분은 이 작품을 “금강산의 겨울”이라 했고, 어느 분은 “이런 산이 있다면 꼭 한번 가보고 싶다.”라고도 하였다. 필자에게 넘겨주셨던 분이 “다시 살 수 없느냐?”고 되물었던 명석이다. 수석의 즐거움과 아름다움을 감상할 수 있는 작품이다.

This piece allows viewers to fully appreciate the enigmatic landscapes of a snowy mountain, highlighted by the stunning beauty of white stone that has piqued my interest. One person described this stone as “Winter in Mount Kumgang,” while another remarked, “If such a mountain exists, I would love to visit it at least once.” This piece was so cherished that the previous owner even inquired about reacquiring it. It is truly a masterpiece that encapsulates the joy and beauty of viewing stones. 

이 작품은 함자(銜字)만 대면 알 수 있는 원로 수석인께서 40년을 넘게 소장하고 계시다가 필자에게 허락해 주셔서 운 좋게 소장하게 되었다. 일생일석(一生一石)으로 꼽을 만한 이 작품은 호수경(湖水景)으로서는 단연 군계일학(群鷄一鶴)이다. 평생 새벽까지 작업을 해왔던 필자에게 물을 담아 놓고 물에 비치는 그림자를 감상하는 새벽의 즐거움은 가히 비교할 것이 없다.

젊은 시절에 등산을 다니면서 여명(黎明)의 시간에 일출을 보는 것은 언제나 가슴이 설레었었다. 이 작품은 성산 일출봉을 닮아 일출봉이라 이름을 지었는데, 보는 것 만으로 일출의 설레임이 있어 좋다.

평원석은 보는 이로 하여금 편안한 느낌을 주는 매력이 있어 대부분의 사람들이 좋아한다. 이 작품은 적당한 크기에 아름다운 형태를 가지고 있는 수작(秀作)으로서 단순함의 아름다움과 평범함 속에서 개방감과 시원함을 맛볼 수 있는 보기 드문 작품이다. 전시회 때 큰 호평을 받은 적이 있었다. 평원석을 소위 고수(高手)들의 돌이라고 말하는데, 평원석의 매력을 느낀다면 그럴만하다.
