방장산(方丈山)의 만월(滿月)

이 작품은 진시 황제가 불로초(不老草)를 구하러 조선에 사람을 보냈다는 야사(野史)에 등장하는 삼신산(三神山)의 하나인 방장산의 만월(滿月)의 신비함을 느낄 수 있는 명석(名石)이다. 몽유도원도와 짝을 이루어 천상(天上)의 본향(本鄕)을 생각게 하는 이 작품은 끝없이 바라보아도 지루함이 느껴지지 않는 걸작 중의 걸작이라고 평하고 싶다.
This piece beautifully captures the mystical allure of the full moon over Bangjangsan Mountain, one of the legendary Three Divine Mountains. It is inspired by folklore about Emperor Qin Shi Huang, who reportedly sent emissaries to the Korean Peninsula in search of the elixir of life. Paired with “Dream of the Peach Blossom Land,” this piece evokes a sense of a celestial homeland. It is a true masterpiece, captivating enough to hold one’s gaze indefinitely without a hint of monotony.
몽유도원도(夢遊桃源圖)

이 작품은 도연명(陶淵明)의 도화원기(桃花源記)에 나오는 무릉도원(武陵桃源)을 제외하고는 달리 설명할 수가 없다고 본다. 자연 속에서 이만한 걸작을 내 평생에 아직 보지 못했다.
* 몽유도원도(夢遊桃源圖) : 안평대군이 어느 날 꿈에 본 무릉도원(武陵桃源)을 안견에게 그리라고 한 것인데, 조선에 둘도 없는 국보라는 것이 중론(衆論)이다.
This stone can only be fully appreciated by referencing the Peach Blossom Spring from Tao Yuanming’s “The Tale of the Peach Blossom Spring.” In my entire life, I have never encountered a natural masterpiece quite like this.
* Dream of the Peach Blossom Land: Commissioned by Prince Anpyeong after he dreamt of the mythical Peach Blossom Spring, it was masterfully painted by the artist An Gyeon. This artwork is widely regarded as an unparalleled national treasure of Joseon.
